How extensive is your French vocabulary? Well, if you recognise words like boutique, café, restaurant, orange and bureau, it's at least five. As it happens, your knowledge of French probably stretches far beyond the confines of the previous sentence. One of the best ways to ease the French learning curve is to memorize the French-English cognates.

What's a cognate? A cognate, or vrai ami, is a word that's spelled the same, or very nearly the same, in both English and French. They key is to attempt your best Jean Reno imperssion when delivering. A page of near cognates - words whose meaning is instantly obvious as the Enlgish language has appropriated them (i.e. personne, adresse, confortable, pharmacie, banque, difficile etc.) - is in nearing completion.

Just be wary of those faux amis, words that look similar but whose meanings greatly differ, like demande (to politely ask for); attende (to wait); magasin (a shop/store) and advertisement (a warning/caution).
